I don't understand why you are asking for some of the information on the form, what is it for?

Nationality

The reason we ask for your nationality is that only people who are British, Irish, Commonwealth citizens or citizens of the European Union are eligible to go on the Register.

Depending on the type of election being contested, there are further restrictions on who is eligible to vote on the grounds of nationality - for example, European citizens cannot vote in UK Parliamentary Elections, but can vote in local elections.

Occupants under 18

As soon as someone reaches their 18th birthday, they can vote in relevant elections from that day onwards, providing that they are on the Register of Electors.

By putting anybody aged 16 or 17 on the Register with a date of birth, they will automatically become eligible to vote at the appropriate time, without having to make their own application to go on the Register once they become 18.

Order of occupants on the register

Within each household, we organise the names to appear alphabetically.

So, for example, if Brian and Allison have a son called Alan, on the Register they would appear alphabetically as: Alan, Allison and then Brian.

This is not us assuming that Alan is the "head of the household".

About the property

Sometimes residential properties are converted to business properties and vise-versa and so each year we must ask you which type of property it is in so we can ensure our records our kept accurate.

If a business property has become a residential property within the last year, simply cross out the reference to "business premises" and complete all the relevant occupier details, then sign the form and return it to the Electoral Services Office using the pre-paid envelope provided.

Contact details

We find it extremely useful to have either a contact telephone number or e-mail address for your property so that if we have a query during the canvass period or in the run up to an election, we are able to contact you.

Don't worry, we do not divulge these details to anyone else - they are purely for the use of the Electoral Services Office.

Opting out of the edited register

To remove members of your household from the edited register simply follow the grid across the page to where it meets the column marked "Edited Register" and place a tick in the box if you wish to opt out.

Opting out will remove you from the edited register and your details will be used for electoral purposes only.

Please note: - Opting out only removes people from the edited register is does not remove a person from the full register. To remove a person from the full register you must cross their name out.
